Abstract

ARGUETA VILLAMAR, Arturo. Knowledge Dialogue, a realistic utopia. Rev. de Inv. Educ. [online]. 2012, vol.5, n.3, pp.15-29. ISSN 1997-4043.

This essay questions the monopoly of western science with respect to knowledge and assumes the necessity to re-encounter and re-affirm the presence of other knowledge systems, consolidating the interculturality of the pluralistic world. We thus posit the necessity of a knowledge dialogue that permits for the necessary plurality of beliefs and values, expressing respect for and recognition of its legitimacy and interest in understanding the reasons for its development. In the text, we develop six essential points about this topic: first, an approximation of the different forms in which human beings know the world; next, the question of how to approach the plurality of knowledge; the latter also implies an analysis of the actual conceptual approaches to traditional and local knowledge; then, the development of processes of recognition of traditional knowledge through the western academy; the limits and possibilities of replacing the monologue with a pluralist dialogue; and, finally, the construction of a knowledge dialogue as a realistic utopia.

Keywords : Knowledge dialogue; pluralism; traditional knowledge.
