Along its historical formation, citizenship has gone through different stages, which start from the more classist and exclusionary views to the process of gradual inclusion of people in the condition of citizens thanks to social achievements. Those have allowed this ascending movement in search of inclusion in the political, economic and social life, with repercussions in the constitutional principles which were assumed throughout the different historical stages of constitutionalism: starting from the conception of the rule of law as the antithesis of the absolutist state, to the beginning of social, democratic and constitutional law constitutionalism, which incorporates a series of attributes for citizens to achieve their well-being in society. Certainly, from the formal point of view, much has been achieved regarding the inclusion of citizens in political life, although there continues to exist neglect of the assurance of the objective conditions that allow for a true citizenship. In this sense, the construction of citizenship should nurture a reflexive and critical position of the environment which should strengthen fundamental values, such as human dignity, justice and solidarity to promote active and critical exercise of citizenship as a way of countering the oppressive trends and domination of citizenship established in the constitutions and conditions of liberalism.
