Resumen

AGUILAR M., María Luz. Discapacidad: entre el estigma y la comunidad. Rev. de Inv. Educ. [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.2, pp.205-216. ISSN 1997-4043.

ABSTRACT Each community has its internal characteristics, which are an expression of its members. The following article attempts to examine, stripped of all idealization, the attitudes and practices that shape its particularity with regard to inclusion (and therefore exclusion) of people who are on the opposite scale of "normality", namely people with discapacities. Contrary to the common perception of community as an enjoyable place for all, we come to understand that everyday life can be aggressive, stigmatizing those that are "different" and creating mechanisms of exclusion that range from isolation, marginalization and assistance (that negates human existence) to the belief that those who are affected have to undergo change in order to "fit in". Similarly, we come to understand how educational institutions re-create communities of stigmatized people, where the disabled find wellbeing amongst themselves, but are distant from an inevitable reality to which they have to return sooner or later. Therefore, it is necessary to think of alternatives that modify this situation, and one possibility, as we will see, is Rehabilitation Based in the Community.

Palabras clave : Community; stigma; discapacity; Rehabilitation Based in the Community.
