ABSTRACT The mathematisation of our societies is a fact that urges us to reconsider the particular formative power of mathematics, that is the ways in which mathematics shape society. It is thus not arbitrary, or by way of example, that this article focuses on mathematics; instead, it acknowledges the significant and powerful role played by mathematics in modern life. As the structuring force of mathematics remains mostly under the surface of technological and socio-technological development, the aim of the article is to uncover the underlying mechanisms and to describe how a critical pedagogy could act on and react to the process of a continuous mathematisation of societies.
