ABSTRACT The conceptions, explicit or not, that exist of mathematical education, as well as of its links with humanity and with reality itself, include particular believes about knowledge within the framework of the teaching/learning of mathematics. In this theoretical/reflexive work, we discuss part of the nature of the knowledge at the core some of the theoretical-methodological currents of Mathematical Education, and particularly, at the core of a critical mathematical education for the context of Venezuelan society, and possibly for Latin America. The descriptions of the functions of mercantilist, hegemonic-technocratic and humanistic knowledge in mathematical education do not permit, from our perspective, to contribute elements for a liberating education.
