University students in Latin America need to increase their exposure to the outputs and practice of academic research. This article shares some notes about the practice of research in economic development from a personal experience in the context of academia and international development organizations. These notes are presented under a structure of minimum contents that are usually part of research work in this discipline. Within this structure, the article details concrete examples and references about theories, models and other tools that are required to conduct research about processes of economic transformation around the world. At the same time, there is a discussion about practical considerations such as interests, skills, data and resources, among others. Finally, each section of this chapter provides comments aimed at improving public policy for research in the context of Latin America.
