Abstract

MEDEIROS, Carmen; RODRIGUEZ-CARMONA, Antonio; FERRUFINO, Giovana  and  TASSI, Nico. Widening the cracks The institutional structures and economic strategies of informal traders. Tinkazos [online]. 2013, vol.16, n.33, pp.27-46. ISSN 1990-7451.

Informal traders in the metropolitan area of La Paz and El Alto have a long history of building interstitial institutional structures. These are crucial to the organization of economic strategies that range from attending provincial market days to importing goods from China. These economic activities in turn reveal the ways in which the traders understand the global economy. They have used this knowledge to respond creatively to exclusion and invisibility.

Keywords : informal traders; informal trade; markets; social networks; traders’ economic strategies.
