The article undertakes an analysis of processes of cultural interchange in the region and the historiographic narrative that legitimised the discourse of “idyllic mestizaje”. It goes on to examine the crisis of mestizaje associated with the events of 11 January 2007, transnational migration and social mobility, with effects upon interculturality in Cochabamba and the appearance of conflictive mestizaje.
