Studies of mining pollution have tended to focus on baselines, assessments, environmental impact studies, environmental monitoring and other similar issues. These studies have not lived up to expectations with regard to environmental impact prevention and mitigation. The main challenge today is to link the technical component of environmental research with socio-economic and political factors.
