Abstract
HUARACHI MULLISACA, JOSE SABU. LEGAL TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY IN BOLIVIA: CHANGES IN THE LAST DECADE. Rev Cient Cienc Méd [online]. 2025, vol.28, n.1, pp.45-48. Epub June 30, 2025. ISSN 1817-7433.
The importance of prenatal diagnosis is crucial for the early detection of serious fetal anomalies, allowing for appropriate counseling, optimal perinatal management, and the reduction of maternal anxiety. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the need for early diagnosis of congenital anomalies and to present the recent changes in Bolivian legislation regarding Legal Interruption of Pregnancy.
The case of a 38-year-old pregnant woman is presented, where a first-trimester ultrasound detected a cystic hygroma and omphalocele in the fetus. Given the association of these malformations with a dismal prognosis and a high risk of aneuploidies, the couple requested the ILE.
Conclusion:
The early detection of severe congenital malformations by ultrasound is vital to providing the patient with options. Within the Bolivian legal framework, these anomalies can justify the ILE, based on the protection of the pregnant woman's integral health.
