Abstract

Valproic Acid (VA), a widely known medication being used in partial and simple epilepsy treatment because of its antiepileptic properties. It's also used within Psychiatry as a mood stabilizer and the support in the treatment for manic episodes on which lithium its contraindicated. We present the case of a 53-year-old man with non-specified schizoaffective disorder and poor adherence to treatment, when initiated treatment with VA developed drug toxicity that was independent of VA serum levels, resolving with intravenous fluids and dose readjustment.
