Fever is a physiological reaction that involves multiple cellular and humoral components in intimate homeostatic balance. This reaction takes place in the presence of exogenous microorganisms or potentially pathogenic substances regulated mainly by the hypothalamus that involves the production and secretion of proinflammatory substances and febrigenic mediators, which determines a cascade of events that raise the body temperature. The fever is usually a controlled response, body temperature usually rises to tolerable levels for tissues. In most cases a controlled feverish reaction that unravels to tolerable tissue levels is deployed. In pathological situations this reaction can be harmful to cells, however, the organism possesses endogenous defense mechanisms that usually regulate the intensity of the fever response. This thermal modulation that protects the body from the side effects of fever is mediated by endogenous cryogens; substances with the ability to lower body temperature and in specific cases produce protective hypothermia.
