This study aims to determine diseases prevailing in hospitalized patients with cleft lip and/or cleft palate of hospital Materno - Infantil "Germán Urquidi",July 2007 - August 2011, also to determine the relationship with sex, origin and types of cleft palate or cleft lip.The research is a descriptive and retrospective nature. Of the total, 11.735 patients hospitalized for various pathologies, 28 case histories (15 men and 13 women) representing 100% of the cases of hospitalized patients with cleft lip and/or palate cleft in the described period were analyzed. According to the results of 28 revised case histories, 50% (14 of 28 patients) have pathologies related to food, of which specifically malnutrition in 1 st grade, acute and mild are the most frequent; 35.7% (10 of 28 patients) have diseases related with breathing and 14.3% (4, 28 patients) have pathologies related to aesthetics. We also found that 46.7% (7 of 15 male patients) have respiratory diseases, more frequently IRAs and pneumonías and 61.5% (8 of 13 patients women) have food pathologies, most commonly acute malnutrition. In addition it is estimated that approximately in 1000 hospitalized patients, 2 have cleft lip and/or cleft palate. In conclusión, dietary diseases are the most prevalent in hospitalized with LL and/or PH, those who have the subtype unilateral LL and PH in particular. The majority of women with these defects have mostly food diseases and in a less degree aesthetic pathologies with preference subtype unilateral LL; the majority of males commonly present respiratory pathologies with LL-PH unilateral and unilateral PH.
