Resumen

BLANCO, Carlos E.. Scientific Communication in Latin America: Temporary Demise of a Venezuelan Research Journal. Punto Cero [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.26, pp.19-32. ISSN 1815-0276.

Dissemination of scientific knowledge is a key component of communication and social development. Thus, studying aspects of Latin American refereed journals can cast light on various problems including those that could be an impediment to the regular editing of such publications. This study aimed at the identification of possible causes and factors associated to the demise of an important Venezuelan academic journal during part of the decade of the 1980s. The analysis is mainly based on segments of discourse of a group of three key actors in the editing process. Answers to semi-structured interviews to these informants closely related to such process in the specific journal studied were analyzed. Results show that the main reasons and factors associated to the demise of the publication are included in an amalgam of factors grouped under the denomination of ‘other factors’, above the financial and administrative ones. It is concluded that the analysis of texts can reveal beliefs and ideologies that develop within academic communities.
