Abstract Although the scientific statute of communication remains in debate and outlines many questions and deep antagonisms, it is possible to support that an academic culture exists in this field and that it has social processes of production, circulation, interchange and use of meanings -all of them culturally situated and eventually applied with technological means- as its common subject matter of reference.  This culture consists of  a more or less  systematic unity of theoretical proposals  which were developed  by  several authors during different and contradictory stages of  field’s institution and which most of specialists accept in their research, teaching and professional practices without discussing about their foundations. This paper offers an approach to this culture and its general proposals.
