This work reveals the difficult and yet encouraging reality experienced by community and alternative mass media in terms of social, institutional and economic sustainability. It stresses the fact that sustainability cannot be reduced to the economic dimension for the means for alternative, community communication exists only in terms of the social dynamics in which they unfold. In fact they can not be without the participation of social actors, without the legitimacy of a political, community project or without the appropriation of the community project itself. Hence the importance of preserving and maintaining such means of communication in a threatening, homogenising and globalizing frame.
