BARRIENTOS BARANADO, Miriam Daysi. Effects of the extract of Echinacea purpurea for the treatment of tricomoniosis, in patients women, San Juan de Dios Hospital, Challapata. BIOFARBO [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.2, pp. 79-84. ISSN 1813-5363.
The tricomoniosis is a parasitosis of the urogenital tract, in men as well as in women, produced by Trichomonas vaginalis. During the present study, the effects of the extract of Echinacea purpurea administered in topical form for the treatment of tricomoniosis in 120 patiens of the Gynecology Department of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Challapata (Oruro) was verified, during the year 2004. A group of 784 women diagnosed with leucorrhoea, pruritus and non specific bleeding, were treated with extract of Echinacea purpurea. The diagnosis was made with direct exams and cultures in specific environments (environment Nº 2); 156 samples were positive for the infection (19.9%), but only 120 patients participated in the research. The Echinacea purpurea extract treatment, was administered to 60 patients in topical form, during 7 days; another group of 60 patients (control group), received metronidazol 2g, one dose only, orally. After seven days a laboratory control was performed. Only 104 patients remained until the end of the research. The results showed that of 52 patients treated with extract of Echinacea purpurea, 46.2% showed negative lab tests and 53.2% showed negative sign-symptoms, while an 88.5% of those treated with metronidazol were lab test negative and 90.8% negative sign-symptoms.(p = 0.0000042). We can state that the Echinacea purpurea, administered in topical form for the tricomoniasis symptoms, cannot be considered as an effective treatment. However, it is also proved that some patients did not achieve any cure with the administered dose of metronidazol.
