The male infertility may be considered an important public health problem; several factors have been identified as possible causes of alterations in the spermatogenesis and the seminal quality. The current therapy produces undesirable effects, lack of efficiency and the patient is generally led to assisted reproduction. Recently it is considered the use of some medicinal herbs, as Lepidium meyenii (Maca) which has been used, from ancient times, in The Andes region, as a resource to increase the fecundity in humans and animals. In the present work it was studied the effect of Maca on spermatogenesis and spermatic quality in subjects diagnosed with infertility. In the study, ten subjects with alterations in one or more seminal parameters were treated with Lepidium meyenii (Maca) for three months, in a dose of 3000 mg/day; seminal parameters were evaluated before and after the treatment; additionally, it was determined the serum concentrations of Testosterone, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Estradiol, Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S), Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), at the same time. Results showed that the treatment with Maca improves all measured spermatic quality values: motility, vitality and morphology. It was also observed an effect on the spermatogenesis expressed as a reduction of germ cells. The spermatic motility grade the IIIrd, in the first hour before the treatment he presented values of 10 ± 0.06 in relation to 15 ± 0.07 after the treatment (P <0.001), in the third hour with values of 8 ± 0.06 before the treatment, increases to 11 ± 0.06 after de treatment (P <0.001). The values of the progressive motility (spermatic motility grade the III and IInd) to the first hour and before the treatment they were of 67.2 ± 0.09, with increase after the treatment to 74.3 ± 0.07 (P <0.01). The spermatic vitality in the first hour did not present significant changes with the treatment. To third hour his values before the treatment went of 75 ± 0.08, and after the treatment they were of 79 ± 0.07 (P <0.01). The morphology he presented values of normal sperms before the treatment of 40 ± 0.10 and after the treatment 45 ± 0.11 (P <0.01). The values of the cells they germinate or immature before the treatment they were of 5.6 ± 0.045 and after the treatment 3.7 ± 0.037 (P <0.01). The hormonal concentrations before and after the treatment they did not change. The Prostate Specific Antigen was not modified after the treatment. The most evident and important effect was the increase of the percentage of sperm cells with motility in subjects whit deficiency in this parameter. It is discussed the possible relationship between the increase in the quantity of motile cells in some subjects with the observed capability of these individuals to pregnant their sexual partner. No significant changes in hormonal levels was detected, after the treatment with Maca.
