Objective:
To review preoperative considerations for older adults undergoing noncardiac surgery.
Method:
An advanced search wasperformed in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Clinical practiceguidelines, review articles, and clinical trials published since 2018 were taken into account.
Result:
Preoperative assessment of older adults should include cardiovascular risk, ASA physical status, anesthetic risk, frailty, functional status and level of independence, comorbidities, lung function, renal function, hematologic assessment, polypharmacy, nutritional status, neurocognitive impairment, sensory impairment, risk of postoperative delirium, depression, swallowing, and obtaining informed consent.
Conclusión:
Preoperative assessment of the older adult requires close interdisciplinary, interprofessional, and transversal collaboration to minimize undesirable postoperative outcomes.
