Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of Klebsiella aerogenes bacteriemia in adult patients with COVID-19 admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in the city of Oruro, during the years 2021 and 2022.

Material and method:

A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional quantitative prevalence study was carried out. The analysis method was based on documentary review, the Instruments were the clinical records and the single medical death certifícate (CEMEUD).

Results:

The prevalence of K. aerogenes bacteriemia in 253 adult patients over 18 years of age with COVID-19 in the Intensive Care Unit was 12.65%; of the total of 32 patients with K. aerogenes bacteriemia and COVID-19, the average age was 60.06 years CI95% (55.48-64.65); the length of hospital stay was 15.66 days 95% CI (11.95-19.36); regarding Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases, the proportion of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was 9.5% (24), Acute Renal Failure 6.3% (16), Systemic Arterial Hypertension 5.9% (15), and Obesity 3.6% (9); finally, the proportion of Candida albicans was 15.6% (5), Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus 6.3% (2), and other pathogens 3.1% (1).

Conclusión:

The prevalence of Bacteriemia caused by K. aerogenes in adults over 18 years of age with COVID-19 was 12.65%.
