Resumen

AMARU, Ricardo et al. ERYTHROCYTOSIS IN OLDER ADULTS HIGH ALTITUDE DWELLERS CHARACTERIZED BY INCREASED ERYTHROPOIETIN AND THROMBOSIS. Rev. Méd. La Paz [online]. 2024, vol.30, n.2, pp.15-20.  Epub 30-Sep-2024. ISSN 1726-8958.

Introduction.

In older adults (>60years), the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases is increased, which includes conditions such as erythrocytosis. Besides understanding the common physiological changes of late adulthood, it is of interest to discern about the features regarding erythrocytosis in older adults.

Objective.

To describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics of erythrocytosis in older adults residing at high altitude.

Material and method.

Retrospective cross-sectional study that considered 631 patients with pathological erythrocytosis, distributed in 3 groups: <30 years (n= 16), 30-60 years (n= 388) and >60 years (n= 227); all individuals residing at high-altitude (3600-4000 m a.s.l), and treated between 2015 to April 2024 on an outpatient basis. Data concerning the presence of blood hyperviscosity symptoms as well as laboratory results were analyzed among the studied groups.

Results.

The mean age of older adult patients with erythrocytosis was 68 years. Clinical characteristics were characterized by increased comorbidities, decreased oxygen saturation (81%), and increased thrombosis (12%), mainly DVT and stroke, more frequently in men (12.7%). Laboratory data showed increased Epo concentrations (73 mIU/ml). No signrficant differences regarding CBC data among groups were observed.

Conclusions.

Erythrocytosis in older adults living at high altitude display specific characteristics (increased Epo and thrombosis) that allow to perform urgent diagnosis and preventive treatment.

Palabras clave : erythrocytosis; older adult; high altitude; erythropoietin; thrombosis.
