MALAGA CORNEJO, Marcos. CLOSURE OF DUCTUS BY EXTRAPLEURAL TECHNIQUE. Rev. Méd. La Paz [online]. 2024, vol.30, n.1, pp.9-13. Epub 30-Jun-2024. ISSN 1726-8958.
Persistent ductus arteriosus constitutes a life-threatening congenital pathology, its closure should be considered from birth or at some point in life, especially if there are complications that worsen the prognosis. This pathology occurs with an expected frequency of 1 case per 2,000 to 2,500 live births.
Ductus has a frequency of presentation that appears to be low, constituting 5 to 10% of live births. However, complications in the development and growth of the patient determine the indication for its closure. The prospect of mortality increases with age and requires applying some method of occlusion of the defect.
Traditionally, the closure procedure is performed through a wide thoracotomy approach or through interventional catheterization. However, this article shows a less invasive and simple technique, with less complexity and risk, with a reduction in operative time, less post-operative pain as well as early recovery, implying a significant reduction in economic investment and without mortality.
After corresponding analysis regarding the technique and the hypothetically proposed advantages of its application in our setting, such technique was implemented reaching 98 cases until submitting this summary. Its versatility, reduction in surgical time, lower economic investment and no mortality are highlighted.
In that way, the series of cases are described displaying highly satisfactory results reflected to date.
