The physician-patient relationship is the foundation and reason of medicine. The historical evolution of this meeting is exposed, from prehistoric to contemporary medicine. Current types or models of physician-patient relationship are described: physician centered, patient centered and mutual models. Reflection on this fundamental medical relationship in the present and future is invited, in search of optimizing medical care.
