Abstract

TARIFA BALDIVIEZO, William. RELACIÓN ENTRE SEXO Y TRASTORNOS DEL RITMO EN CHAGÁSICOS. ESTUDIO EN PACIENTES CON MARCAPASOS O DESFIBRILADOR. Rev. Méd. La Paz [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.2, pp.5-8. ISSN 1726-8958.

The aim of this study was to establish the association between sex and rhythm disorders in chagasic patients who needed implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator (ICDs). 146 chagasic patients with pacemakers or ICDs who consecutively came from different regions of the country, to the Department of Cardiology Hospital Obrero No 1 between 2011 and 2012 were studied. 61.2 % of the group of women presenting sinus node sick (SNS), whereas 55.8 % of men disorders atrioventricular (AV) conduction was observed (p < 0.05). The SNS was an association 3 times higher in women (OR 2.5, 95% CI 1.2-5.2), and AV conduction disorders nearly doubled in men (OR 0.6, 95 % 0.4-0.9). The frequency of ventricular tachycardia was more frequent in males. We conclude that females have a higher proportion of SNS and AV conduction disorder and ventricular tachycardia in males. Women are more likely to develop SNS twice while the men to get AV conduction disorder. The frequency of the different types of arrhythmias under study was higher in women. Ventricular tachycardia was more frequent in men. It is likely that these differences are genetically based. Studies on genetic markers which could explain this observation are needed.

Keywords : Chagas disease; arrhythmias; sex.
