Abstract

Introduction. Breastfeeding is the best way of providing ideal food for the healthy birth and development of infants, as well as nutritional needs provides numerous advantages of developing immunological, psychological, economical and practical for the child and the mother. Objective. The main objective is to determine the characteristics of breastfeeding and nutrition in children 0-2 years old, considering breastfeeding indicators proposed by WHO and UNICEF. Material and Methods. Prospective, cross includes children from 0-2 years of age attending the outpatient department of Pediatrics ofthe Hospital La Paz, during the first six months of 2012. The total number of children attending the outpatient service was 6.177 between boys and girls, the sample was taken of 362 children (as). Results. After the project was obtained cone results that 70% of children received early breastfeeding, 79% received exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of life, 57% of children aged 6 months to 2years old breastfed Continuous, 93% of children receiving supplementary feeding from 6 months with soft foods, and 100% of the studied children were ever breastfed. Discussion. Analyzing the results, in our breastfeeding is promoted as a method of disease prevention, and has been very well applied by mothers, with a conscience to adequately feed their children according to their age, data are inconclusive in most with those obtained in the literature. Recommendations. This study reinforces the need to develop more specific activities and programs in our area, forthe promotion of breastfeeding, itis necessary to keep open lines of research aimed to know the real situation of breastfeeding in Bolivia and especially evaluate the benefitsthereunder
