Abstract

QUISPE FERNANDEZ, Luis Alberto. PREVALENCIA DE DIABETES MELLITUS EN LA I CAMPAÑA DE DETECCIÓN PRECOZ DE DIABETES EN LA POBLACIÓN ADULTA DE HUARINA. Rev. Méd. La Paz [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.1, pp.41-46. ISSN 1726-8958.

Objective: To measure the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and related rísk factors in Huarina. Material and Methods: This is a descriptive transversal study in Huarina people done by taking capillary glycemia, blood pressure, weight, stature, body mass índex, girdle circumference, and a test about risk factors in persons older than 21 years old, this study was done in the I campaign of early diabetes diagnosis in November 11th 2009 Huarina, La Paz-Bolivia. Results: The prevalence of Diabetes mellitus in Huarina is 11,3%, impaired glucose tolerance 2%, there were 8,4 % of know cases (they knew about their pathology) and 3,3% of new cases. Big percentage of the Huarina habitants suffer some rísk factor to diabetes mellitus the most common was obesity with 52 %, others like Metabolic syndrome 35% an high blood pressure in 10%. The relation between man/women there was no big differences, 13 % man and 11,3 % in women. Conclusion: Diabetes is a genuine public health problem in Huarina. The prevalence in Huarina (rural) is higher than de urbane Bolivian population prevalence (7,2), Further, the high prevalence of IGT and another risk factors that were found suggests that diabetes prevalence will increase in the near future in the country unless prevention strategies are implemented.
