Leachate irrigation offers the opportunity to close the nutrient cycle and produce an effluent of suitable quality for discharge. Phytodepuration has been identified as an effective technological solution, with low implementation costs, easy operation and available maintenance for the removal of pollutants from contaminated soils and water. Within this framework, laboratory-scale research was carried out at the Bolivian Catholic University, Tarija Campus. The objective of the research: to verify the phytodepuration of leachate from the Pampa Galana Municipal Landfill in the city of Tarija, using three ornamental species: Canna Indica, Zantedeschia Aethiopica, and Pseudosasa Japonica. The phytodepuration of leachates was carried out in individual pots of approximately 20 liters, with vertical subsurface flow, where the ornamental species were planted in an open space; the pots were filled with substrates: 1/3 gravel and 2/3 soil from the same landfill. During the experimentation, the prototypes were fed considering an average dilution of 10%, where the efficiency of nutrient elimination was evaluated: Nitrogen and Phosphorus, and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). From the results, the Canna Indica species showed better performances, obtaining high removal percentages: COD (n up to 80%), phosphates (n>70%) and nitrogen (n>98%). In general terms, the results for all species confirm the feasibility of using different species in the phytodepuration of landfill leachate. Irrigation with diluted leachate also did not affect species growth; plants irrigated with diluted leachate developed higher biomass than control plants.
