Orchids lack endosperm, which is why germination is low, and under natural conditions, they depend on mycorrhizal fungi for their survival. There is the alternative of cultivating them in vitro conditions to guarantee germination,because it facilitates chemical (culture medium) and physical conditions for the establishment, for this purpose the most used media are Murashige and Skoog (MS), Vacin Wein (VW), Knudson C (KC), but also, in other works, low-quality basal media (PA) were used, such as salts for chemical fertilization of crops. In the present study, germination tests were carried out on Epidendrun secundum in alternative media with hydroponic culture salts (macro and micronutrients) supplemented with 10% and 20% coconut water (AC) and types of gelling agents (gelrite, agar and carrageenan). The seeds disinfected with 0.5% NaClO for 15 min. They were cultivated in the growth chamber at 25°C with a photoperiod of 16/8 hours of light and darkness, for 105 days. The percentage of germination, mortality and description of development phases in germination evaluated. Epidendrum secundum presented 85.8% germination in the gelrite medium with macro and micronutrient salts from hydroponics and with the addition of 20% coconut water. Germination was better (86.4%) with 20% CA, than with 10% CA, which was (78.1%). However, with the addition of carrageenan, germinated protocorms tend to die by 1.8%.
