Abstract

HERRERA-AGUILAR, Andrés; PRIETO-RAMIREZ, Rafael  and  GARCIA-M., Yennifer. Environmental sustainability analysis of the Doña Juana landfill (Bogotá - Colombia), through the IICA methodology for estimating the water footprint. RevActaNova. [online]. 2020, vol.9, n.4, pp.553-568. ISSN 1683-0789.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the environmental sustainability of the Doña Juana sanitary landfill, located in the Tunjuelo river, based on the Methodological Guide for the Evaluation of the Water Footprint in the Hydrographic Basin (IICA, 2017) with adaptations to the local conditions. Said guide sets out to develop the analyzes from: i) the estimation of the gray water footprint, and ii) the calculation of the índex of the level of water contamination. The estimation of the gray water footprint was advanced by taking data for eleven months of 2016 of flow rates (of effluents and the receiving body) and concentrations of 20 contaminating factors (metals, metalloids and physicochemical aspects). As a result, the value of the gray water footprint, for section 2 of the Tunjuelo was 826,695 m3 month-1. Regarding the index of the level of water contamination, (relation between the total gray water footprint and the real runoff) the value obtained was less than 1, which according to the guide, which means the discharge of leachate from the landfill to the Tunjuelo river , for that period and with the flow conditions and variables registered, it was environmentally sustainable. Finally, this research provides the basis for analyzing the applicability of the IICA Methodology, which is intended to define the degree of environmental sustainability of landfills, based on a constant and judicious follow-up of the parameters established by regulations and provides technical criteria for planning and adequate management of water resources.

Keywords : Tunjuelo River; gray water footprint; landfill; Bogotá-Colombia; leachates; environmental sustainability.
