Abstract

Wastewater represents a challenge in terms of its treatment, because its disposal in a water body generally causes negative impacts of high magnitude, so the application of some treatment is important; a disadvantage is the high amounts of nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates, causing eutrophication problems in the recipient bodies, so the reduction of these parameters is relevant, in this sense it is possible to use microalgae for the removal these, in addition to meaning an economic treatment and with a positive impact on the capture of carbon dioxide. The objective of this study was evaluating the removal of nitrates and phosphates from domestic wastewater by an algae consortium, composed of Microcystis sp., Scenedesmus sp. and Lyngbya sp. The growth and the removal process were carried out in photobioreactors bubble column type, with an air injection for 12 hours per day and natural and artificial light were used. There were determinate the growth kinetics (chlorophyll concentration by the trichromatic method), nitrate concentration (colorimetric method by cadmium reduction), phosphate concentration (colorimetric method, ascorbic acid) and others were evaluated. The maximum nutrient removal was determined until day 55, at which time the algae culture was in death phase; the best percentage of nitrate removal was 75.84% and 93.75% phosphate removal.
