VILDOZO, Luis H.; PEREDO RAMIREZ, Yasin y VARGAS ELIO, Fabiola. Preliminary diagnostic of bacteriologic water quality of human consumption and corrective measures priority assessment in the municipality of Poopó (Oruro, Bolivia). RevActaNova. [online]. 2020, vol.9, n.4, pp.483-503. ISSN 1683-0789.
The presence of coliform bacteria in drinking water represents a potential threat to public health, as it may increase the risk of generating infectious diseases in the most vulnerable population. In the municipality of Poopó, the population has low water quality, as well as poor coverage in rural communities, which could be related to the high rate of infectious diseases registered. The present study was aimed at establishing the prioritization of corrective measures of bacterial contamination and the sanitation of water for human consumption in downtown area and rural communities of the municipality of Poopó, through in-situ bacteriological monitoring to establish the presence of total and thermotolerant coliforms, in addition to a sanitary inspection at each sampling point. Bacteriological monitoring showed the presence of total coliforms in 82% of the samples and thermotolerant coliforms in 48%. The sanitary inspection showed recurrent flaws that evince unhealthy conditions of water management and storage by the residents. The priority assessment of corrective measures showed that 20,5% of the samples require low priority, 44,6% medium priority and 34,9% urgent priority. These results allowed to conclude that water management in Poopó requires measures to eliminate bacterial contamination, considering that rural communities that manage their water resources require more intervention than the downtown area, because they are highly exposed to health risks that affect their quality of life.
