Abstract

FERNANDEZ VAZQUEZ, Carlos A. A.  and  FERNANDEZ FUENTES, Miguel. Inventory, evaluation and projection of carbon emissions from the national electric sector. Bolivia 2025. RevActaNova. [online]. 2018, vol.8, n.3, pp.354-375. ISSN 1683-0789.

The following study presents an analysis of the national electricity sector based on a simplified model for its representation and the estimation of the carbon emissions for which it is responsible. The model is initially defined for the year 2014 in order to be able to validate it based on available information that allows the contrast of values estimated by the model with estimated values from the burning of fuels for generating plants. Subsequently the proposal for potential scenarios for the national electricity sector by 2025 and the calculation of the carbon emissions that could be expected in each case is made. The proposed scenarios correspond to alternatives based on the portfolio of generation projects proposed in PEEP 2025, thermal energy consumption by thermoelectric power plants and new trends in electricity generation types and systems. Based on the developed model, it is possible to estímate a national electricity sector emission factor of 0.42 ton CO2 /MWhel for the year 2014. This emission factor should only reduce its value in the future, as analyzed in the scenarios taken into account, mainly because of the inclusion of large-scale hydroelectric projects in the energy matrix, allowing the emission factor to be reduced to values between 0.21 and 0.09 ton CO2/ MWhel.
