STADLER-KAULICH, Noemi. Producir logrando sinergias con la naturaleza. RevActaNova. [online]. 2011, vol.5, n.2, pp.266-281. ISSN 1683-0789.
Conventional agriculture is in eternal struggle against nature with the only result being soil degradation. In the Andean valleys, soil degradation and climate change are the two causes that endanger the harvest. It is time to recognize the importance of a changing of paradigm, leaving behind the agriculture of extraction which hurts the environment. It is time to aim for cooperation with nature, pointing out synergies which permit sustainable production. After the description of elementary problems of conventional agricultural production in semiarid zones of Andean valleys, which is especially soil degradation, integrated solutions for sustainable agriculture are presented. Agroforestry is described as diversification of production which at the same time is sustainable and represents the agricultural technique named climate-friendly-farming, which reduces the impacts of climate change. With agroforestry it is not only possible to find solutions to most of the productivity problems, it permits, besides the protection of natural resources like water and soil fertility, to create a pleasing microclimate. These impacts of agroforestry have already been experienced by the Incas one thousand years ago during a temperature rise in the Andean region.
