Abstract

BARREIRO, Benjamín Diego. Un sistema agroforestal en pleno semiárido brasileño: multiplicando la agroecología y los cuidados con la naturaleza.  La experiencia de Adão de Jesús Oliveira. RevActaNova. [online]. 2011, vol.5, n.2, pp.254-265. ISSN 1683-0789.

The Nova Esperança agrovila is located in Sertão do Araripe Pernambucano, Brazil; its origin dates from a context of struggle for land, after the properties of farm families were flooded by water from a dam constructed in the region. This generated in its inhabitants a political consciousness, organization and coexistence with the semiarid ecosystem. Today, the community does not use pesticides on their crops, garbage is collected and deposited in a single location. Almost all families have plate tanks with water for household consumption. The school community works within a pedagogy of contextualized education inherited from the rural school of Ouricuri - ERO, the first school in the region to work with the logic of contextual education. Adão Jesus Oliveira, a young inhabitant of the agrovila, alumnus of the ERO, a married father of two children, is a community member who is forged in the struggle for the development of family agriculture and agro-ecological worthy coexistence with the semiarid.  He works to develop a production strategy that combines environmental protection and the production of healthy foods for his family and also for the market. In the 8.5 hectares of land in that he works with his family, he raises goats and chickens, plants corn, beans, sorghum, vegetables and a variety of food for the family. He developed a method for storing seed, water and food for his family and feed for the animals. Concerned about the devastation of the caatinga in the region, he decided five years ago to grow their products in a system without indiscriminate logging and deforestation, implementing an agroforestry system in the semi-arid region, and so he has fostered the multiplication of life and caring for nature. Today the Adão agroforestry system has become a reference point as a system of coexistence with the semiarid, since it is a pilot in that vast region. For this reason he receives visitors from different backgrounds, interested in the development of this innovative experience. It has also gained prominence for its mitigation and adaptation practices related to climate change.

Keywords : agroecology; agroforestry systems; coexistence with the semiarid; family farmers.
