Objective: To establish whether factors: 1) Sociodemographic mother (extreme maternal age, marital status, maternal height and level of education), 2) pregestational (nutritional status of the mother and parity), and 3) Gestational (gestational age, number of prenatal care and pregnancy hypertension); are risk factors for low birth weight in the Hospital for Women. Method.- analytical observational epidemiological study of cases and controls. Cases (n = 250) were Newborns with weight less than 2500 g born in the Hospital de la Mujer the first half of 2012. The controls (n = 250) were Newborns with greater weight 2500g born in the same hospital in the same time period. The case-control ratio was 1:1. The data were obtained from the Perinatal Information System (SIP) Hospital for Women. Results.- association between these variables and Low birth weight was found: Gestational age less than 37 weeks (OR = 10.43, 95% CI 6.8-15.7), less than 4 prenatal controls (OR = 2.65, 95% CI 1.81- 3.89), pregnancy-induced hypertension (OR = 2.04, 95% CI 1.14-3.67), malnutrition of the mother (oR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.2-2.6) and primiparous or multiparous be (OR = 1.6, 95% CI1.12-2.28). Conclusions.- was demonstrated thatgestational age less than 37 weeks, having less than 4 antenatal, hypertension induced by pregnancy, maternal malnutrition and primipara multipara is mother or are risk factors for low birthweight in the Hospital Women. Being the most important: Gestational age.
