ABSTRACT Research question: Are there any changes in the maternal mortality rate and other indicators in Chuquisaca, and their relation with poverty, since 1998 to 2006? Objective: To describe the magnitude and structure of maternal mortality in Chuquisaca since 1996 to 2006, and its relation with poverty. Design: Retrospective and descriptive study, series of cases. Methods: Secondary information of maternal deaths from monthly reports of the Health Service of the Department of Chuquisaca. Information on the population by municipality from the National Institute for Statistics. Results: There is a small reduction of maternal mortality in Chuquisaca from 1996 to 2006; the poorer municipalities have the higher risk rates for maternal death. Hemorrhages continue to be the principal cause of maternal mortality.
