RESEARCH QUESTION Which are the most significant manometric findings in idiopatic achalasia made in our own laboratory? GENERAL OBJECTIVES To identify the typical manometric parameters in idiopathic achalasia in the Motility Laboratory of the Instituto Gastroenterólogico Boliviano-Japonés (Bolivian-Japanese Institute for Gastroenterology) in the city of La Paz. SPECIFIC AIMS To establish the significance of oesophageal aperistalsis in idiopathic achalasia. DESIGN AND METHODS Descriptive, retrospective study of 26 patients who were examined during a period of 8 years in the Motility Laboratory of the Instituto Gastroenterologico Boliviano-Japonés in the city of La Paz. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The percentage of hypertonic sphincter and abnormal relaxation are both important fi ndings; however, the most signifi cant parameter found in idiopathic achalasia is the oesophageal aperistalsis
