RESEARCH QUESTION Which World be the most frequent complication in patients diagnosed with Diabetes in the Hospital de Clínicas Universitario, and which the factors that support its progress in the month of December 2004? GENERAL OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency of complications in patients diagnosed with Diabetes in the Hospital de Clínicas Universitario in La Paz. DESIGN descriptive, series of cases. LOCATION Services of Endocrinology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Psychology and Nutrition of the Hospital de Clínicas Universitario in La Paz, Bolivia. METHOD A survey of 100 patients diagnosed with Diabetes, was conducted. The patients came to their routine control in the out patient clinic of Endocrinology in the Section of Internal Medicine in the Hospital de Clínicas Universitario in La Paz. Each patient of the study group underwent a clinical endocrinological examination, after which he/ she was sent to the services of Nephrology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Psychology and Nutrition to put in evidence the possible existence of complications. RESULTS Of the examined patients 99% presented a complication or the beginning of one. The most frequent one was of the dermatological type. In males, 36 % of dermatological complications were detected, 20% of cardiovascular complications, with 12% of neurological complications, 16% of nephrological complications with 8% of ophthalmic and psychological complications. Females with 31% presented dermatological problems with 24% of cardiovascular problems, with 15% of nephrological type affects, with 8% of ophthalmological,,, 11% psychological and 11% neurological problems. CONCLUSIONS We observed that from100 patients only 40 went to the controls with the different specialties and came back to the outpatient clinic. It was seen that from those 40, only one did not have any complication. The most frequent complications were the dermatopathies in both sexes, predominantly with the problem of candidiasis, then existed the cardiac problems, predominantly impairment of the conduction.
