Objective To evaluate the accuracy in the collection of inpatients anthropometric data at "Dr. Ovidio Aliaga Uría" Children's Hospital in La Paz and the use of Índices and indicators to assess nutritional status. Design Cross sectional and descriptive. Place Children 's Hospital "Ovidio Aliaga Uría" La Paz. Participants The sample consisted of 25 health staff members among them physicians, registered and auxiliar/nurses, all in charge of measuring weight and height of 80 paediatric in-patients, selected at random using a systematic probabilistic methodology. Methods An evaluation of the equipment and the places used for weight and height measurements was made, as well as observations of the health staff in order to verify the application of the norms while measuring and weighing children. A questionnaire was applied in order to assess the characteristics and time of training in anthropometry. All data obtained by the health staff was compared with data collected by observing anthropometrists, medical records were revised to verify the use of weight and height data. Results Among the main results, it was found that equipment and measurement places fulfilled standard requirements and that the health staff received at least one training in anthropometry. It was found that 49% of the health staff registered age, 65% weighed and 75% measured height correctly. Data was used in 23% of cases, 14% of these were applied to evalúate nutritional status. Twelve percent of paediatric residents built nutritional indicators using height for age, weight for age and weight for height. Body Mass Index was not used for nutritional evaluation in children older than six years. We found that 49% of the children had their age registered correctly , 56% were weighed correctly and in 49% the height was measured in the right manner. Conclusión At Childrens Hospital "Ovidio Aliaga liria" exist the necessary conditions to obtain accurate weight and height values, and the health staff has been trained in the subject, however, there is inadequacy in the process of weight and height measurements and in their application, construction and interpretation of data. The article recommends an update of training and constant supervision.
