Abstract

CUELLAR SOTO, Erika; SEGUNDO, Jorge  and  BANEGAS, Jorge. The guanaco in the Bolivian Gran Chaco: a review. Ecología en Bolivia [online]. 2017, vol.52, n.1, pp.38-57. ISSN 1605-2528.

Habitat loss through the transformation of open ecosystems (savannahs, grasslands) into scrubby habitats dominated by woody species may be playing an important role in the decline and extinction of species. The increase in the density of woody species is changing the physiognomy of the Chacoan pampas system and this effectively results in the loss or degradation of the habitat for the guanaco. The guanaco is an example of a species requiring urgent actions to stop habitat loss, as well as specific studies on the spatial transformation patterns of these environments, since its diet, feeding areas, reproduction areas, and social behavior are linked to these ecosystems. In this paper we summarize the information about the situation of guanaco in the Gran Chaco and we hope that this will be the basis for developing priority actions at the national level.
