MIRANDA-CHUMACERO, Guido. Mortality rate of ornamental fishes during harvest in the Tacana TCO: an additional factor when selecting species for harvest. Ecología en Bolivia [online]. 2016, vol.51, n.2, pp.157-168. ISSN 1605-2528.

The ornamental fish trade is one of those biodiversity uses that remove the most number of individuals from the wild. Many of these individuals do not survive the complete process. In order to measure mortality rate for each species, I made an experimental harvest in the Tacana TCO (Indigenous Territory) (Dept. La Paz, Bolivia) where there is interest in starting the sustainable use of ornamental fish by indigenous communities. Fish were captured using trawls, the common to be by communities, and subsequently passed through all stages of use (capture, boat transportation, air shipping and habituation in aquariums). In each stage, the number of dead individuals was recorded. Mortality rate was measured and reached 46.7% and the highest mortality was recorded during boat transportation, while during air transportation, the lowest mortality was registered. There is a strong relationship between the number of individuals captured and the number of individuals dying during the process. While many species can survive the complete process, many do not even pass the first stage. This shows that in order to initiate management actions, some species should not be removed from their environment at all, while for other species efforts should be made in previous equipment and training. The results may also be indicative of the number of individuals that generally die product of this type of activity, which should be taken into account in regulations and estimates of the harvest volumes in order to measure the true impact of removal on fish stocks.
