Abstract

TEJADA, Renata et al. Wildlife use survey in the Tacana comunitary land of origin, Bolivia. Ecología en Bolivia [online]. 2006, vol.41, n.2, pp.138-148. ISSN 1605-2528.

As part of a project realized by Consejo Indígena del Pueblo Tacana CIPTA to elaborate a Sustainable Development Strategy based on Natural Resource Management for the Tacana TCO, we conducted a preliminary evaluation of wildlife use in the 20 Tacana communities found within their territorial demand. Participatory workshops revealed that 181 vertebrate species are used in a variety of broad use categories. Of a total of 43 mammal species utilized, 40 are consumed, 56 of 72 utilized birds are consumed, 9 of 16 utilized reptile species are food sources, and 40 of 50 utilized fish species are consumed. Other utilized vertebrate species are exclusively used in a medicinal, handicraft or game context. Interviews suggested that the most frequently hunted wildlife species are Tapirus terrestris, Mazama americana, Dasyprocta variegata, Cuniculus paca, Pecari tajacu, Ateles chamek, Alouatta sara, Penelope jacquacu and Mitu tuberosa. Fishing concentrates onPseudoplatystoma triginun,P.fasciatum,Prochilodus nigricans and Colossoma macropomum.
