Resumen

ARAUJO MURAKAMI, Alejandro; ARROYO PADILLA, Luzmila; KILLEEN, Timothy J.  y  SALDIAS PAZ, Mario. Forest dynamics, incorporation and storage of carbon and biomass in Noel Kempff Mercado National Park. Ecología en Bolivia [online]. 2006, vol.41, n.1, pp.24-45. ISSN 1605-2528.

The present study was conducted in two permanent areas of investigation, each composed of two permanent plots of measurement, one in Tropical Rain Forest (TRF) and the other in Semi deciduous Dry Forest (SDF). In order to understand the dynamics of the two forest types, the mortality rate was calculated as a function of the total number of individuals. This was determined to be 2.09% per year for TRF and 2.94% per year for SDF. As a function of basal area, the mortality rate was determined to be 1.59 % per year in TRF and 3.76% per year in SDF. The annual periodic increase in diameter was calculated at 0.23 cm/year for TRF and 0.43 cm/year for SDF, which predicts the time necessary for an individual to increase from 10 cm diameter to its maximum size; 518 years in TRF and 292 years in SDF. The biomass and accumulated carbon were estimated by mathematical function, with basal area as the independent variable, at 326 tn/ha of biomass and 156 tn/ha of carbon in TRF and 260 tn/ha of biomass and 125 tn/ha of carbon in SDF. The accumulation of carbon was also estimated by half of the change produced in basal area, resulting in 1.65 tn/ha/year for TRF and 0.44 tn/ha/year for SDF. The structure of both forest types is constant; individuals that die or increase in size class are immediately replaced by other individuals, thus maintaining the forest structure.

Palabras clave : Forest of dynamics; mortality; recruitment; growth; biomass.
