Several capture-recapture methods used to estimate population size assume that the probability of recapture is homogeneous among individuals of a given population. This assumption is empirically false for two species of bolivian small mammals. Recapture probabilities are heterogeneous for Oxymycterus paramensis paramensis and Akodon subfuscus subfuscus. Some individuals are captured more than expected by chance while others are recaptured less than expected by chance. The heterogeneity in their trap response precludes the use of capturerecapture methods based on homogeneous probabilities of recaptures. Implications of assumptions violation for population parameters estimates are discussed.
