Resumen

HENNESSEY, A. Bennett. Fourteen new altitude bird records from the humid montane forest, Madidi National Park, Bolivia. Ecología en Bolivia [online]. 2003, vol.38, n.2, pp.121-124. ISSN 1605-2528.

San Miguel Chico is located in a humid montane forest valley (1600 a 1750 m) in Madidi National Park, close to the town of Pata in the Apolo area. During a three-day study (September 10 to 13, 2000) on a single local trail, I identified 68 species of birds and recorded 14 new altitude records. The bird community in this montane habitat had an unusually high diversity of lowland tropical species. I identified four restricted-range indicator species for the Bolivian and Peruvian Lower Yungas Endemic Bird Area (EBA): Simoxenops striatus, Thamnophilus aroyae, Chiroxiphia boliviana y Hemitriccus spodinps. Simexonops striatus is the only species not common and possibly deserves protection attention. I recorded Hemitriccus rufigularis, which is considered threatened-Lower Risk, for its small and declining population. With one short study, it is difficult to know if these records are indicating a population range in Bolivia or a particular site in a unique geological situation. It will be important to analysis this data with future bird studies in Madidi N. P and adjacent areas.
