Abstract The keñua tree (Polylepis tarapacana), found at 5200 m a.s.l. in the Andes Mountains, grows at the highest treeline in the world. We measured the thermal conduction coefficient of keñua bark samples taken from different locations within the Andes Mountains. These measurements were used to find a correlation between environmental inputs and high altitude plant defence mechanisms. We found a new classification method to identify the origin of plant samples
