Abstract A detailed analysis o the problem of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field was carried out. It was proven that it is possible to preserve the manifest covariance in a rigorous canonical treatment under the Dirac theory or the Hamiltonian formalism associated to singular Lagrangians.
