ABSTRACT The yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae was used as a biocatalyst within a microaerophilic two-compartment microbial fuel cell anode. It was found that by using potassium ferricyanide as an electron acceptor the yeasts produce 100 mV voltage more than cells without yeast after 1.5 days of operation with a 150 mV voltage open circuit. The kinetics of the microorganism was measured outside the fuel cells and compared to the development of voltage over time, indicating that the growth of the yeasts helps increase the voltage.
