Abstract Black carbon (BC) is a fraction of atmospheric aerosols that primarily affects climate and health. This study shows for the first time the results of BC measurements in atmospheric aerosols collected at the Huancayo Observatory (OHY), Peru; from June to December 2015. Additionally, an evaluation was carried out to identify the main regions from where the high air pollution was transported to OHY. BC concentration was registered with an aethalometer with a mean of 0.81 ±0.22 μg/m3. Also, based on the algorithm of Sandradewi, it is estimated that 41.27 % of BC was related to biomass burning sources. Using bivariate polar plots from the openair library of R statistical software it was possible to identify, high concentrations of BC coming from all directions, with the most dominant direction being easterly with wind velocities of up to 4 m/s. Within this direction are important populated urban locations: Huancayo (501 384 inh.), Sicaya (57 324 inh.) to the northeast, and Chupaca (53 263 inh.) to the southeast. It was also noted that high concentrations of BC are associated with strong winds ranging from 5 a 7 ms-1 and also winds with an easterly direction. Biomass burning in the Amazon Basin (Brazil, Bolivia and Peru) and the trans boundary transport of air pollutants could explain these observations.
