Abstract

GUACHALLA ALARCON, Naomi; YANEZ PAGANS, Sergio  and  CALLE GARCIA, Carla. Results of the workshop "Instrumentation in elementary particle physics" as part of the escaramujo project in La Paz - Bolivia. Revista Boliviana de Física [online]. 2016, vol.29, n.29, pp.1-5. ISSN 1562-3823.

In this paper we show the results obtained in the workshop "Instrumentation in Elemen-tary Particle Physics" as a part of the Escaramujo project which consisted of the construction of three detectors based on plastic scintillators and silicon photomultipliers that we used for measuring the rate of charged particles (TPC) at different altitudes (between 3427 and 5238 masl) and at the same altitude (5238 masl). Moreover, we characterized lead filters of different thicknesses by measuring the TPC with the detector located below them. We found that the TPC grows exponentially with altitude and that it has fluctuations at the same altitude. On the other hand, our results indicate that lead filters with thickness greater than a critical value of 5 mm are capable of absorbing charged particles, causing an exponential decrease in the TPC as a function of the thickness; meanwhile the filters with thickness lower than that value cause an increase in TPC.
